The missing piece: Why Australian manufacturing needs Time and Motion study

A missed opportunity in Australian manufacturing

In 2018, I found myself on a solar panel installation site with UGL, in the stark, unrelenting landscape of Tailem Bend. Under the blindingly intense Australian sun, the worksite was more than just hot—it felt like a desert. The air shimmered with heat, and every task felt heavier, each movement slower. Out there, you could feel the pressure of time like the sun pressing down on you.

In this setting, I encountered a challenge that many in Australian manufacturing might overlook:

  • The Challenge of Time: Time was slipping between our fingers, toying with us, weaving through tasks in ways we couldn’t quite pin down. In a place like this, where every minute spent in the blistering heat counts, the elusive nature of time was palpable.
Workers at a solar farm shown in inefficient postures with sand slipping through their hands, symbolizing wasted time. A large, melting clock is in the background, emphasizing urgency. The scene is sunlit, with visible heat waves and solar panels.

  • The missing key: Despite widespread adoption of lean principles, one essential element was missing—a way to capture and optimize time’s every move like a masterful conductor leading an orchestra through a complex score.

This foundational technique, deeply rooted in Industrial Engineering, was conspicuously absent from our lean practices. Oddly enough, without it, we were letting time slip away into inefficiencies and costs that quietly stack up yet scream for attention.

Bridging the gap in manufacturing innovation

Let’s focus on your business for a moment. Australia’s manufacturing sector is at a crossroads, facing challenges that could define its future. As Weld Australia points out, the path forward relies on:

  1. Innovation
  2. Upskilling
  3. Embracing advanced manufacturing techniques

Many manufacturers may not realize they’re missing out on the unseen value of time and motion studies—a deceptively simple yet transformative tool that could reshape your operations in surprising ways.

Without time and motion studies, inefficiencies may remain obscured, causing losses that quickly add up. Picture it:

  • Your workers might take extra steps
  • Reach further than needed
  • Linger on tasks that don’t add value

Each of these seemingly minor actions snowballs over time, eroding your productivity and profits.

The risks of ignoring Efficiency tools

The challenge you face

I’ve been a manager in large organizations, and I understand the pressure of watching time slip away, leading to countless “lost” hours. Despite its proven effectiveness, I’ve rarely seen Australian manufacturers fully embrace the precise power of time and motion studies.

  • The Education Gap: Our educational institutions often fail to emphasize Industrial Engineering, leaving us with a workforce that doesn’t yet understand the full impact of small inefficiencies.Workers at a solar farm performing tasks efficiently, guided by a glowing digital stopwatch. The background includes solar panels and performance charts, under a bright sky. The workers' movements are synchronized, showing the positive impact of efficiency tools.

You might feel the weight of keeping operations smooth and efficient in the face of industry demands. It’s frustrating to see promising ideas held back by endless meetings and approvals, watching productivity quietly “slip out for coffee” while no one’s looking.

Consequences of Inaction

Ignoring time and motion studies is risky; it’s not just about lost productivity. Ironically, it can lead to higher labor costs while trying to save on time, longer cycle times, and a weakened edge in a rapidly shifting market. In today’s competitive landscape, every second you let drift away is a second gained by your competitors.

Unlocking your business potential with Time and Motion Studies

Now, let’s be honest. I’m guessing you haven’t gotten around to making a decision yet. Perhaps you’re thinking:

  • “It can wait.”
  • “We’re managing well enough.”

But consider this: every moment you hesitate, you’re leaving potential savings and efficiencies on the table—allowing time to slip away like grains of sand.

Imagine this

What could your operations achieve with time and motion studies in place? Yes, imagine a workplace where every motion flows with purpose, and time syncs perfectly with your goals, each moment carving significance into your success story. The stopwatch stands close, attentive, recording every gain you achieve.

Don’t let this gap hold you back—today, we can help you bring this vigilant partner into your manufacturing practices.

A unique opportunity for transformation

In today’s manufacturing landscape, where every second counts as much as every decision, innovation and efficiency are crucial. Together, we can unlock your business’s full potential and navigate the complexities of modern manufacturing. I go over this in much more detail in our training course about Lean principles(Link to the course), where we dive deep into methods to capture each elusive moment of efficiency.
